The HVAC & Sheet Metal Superintendent is responsible for overseeing the execution, supervision, and

completion of industrial HVAC and sheet metal construction scopes, including ductwork fabrication,

installation, and air handling system work. This role ensures projects are completed safely, on time, and

within budget while maintaining quality and compliance with industry regulations. The HVAC & Sheet

Metal Superintendent coordinates with project managers, subcontractors, and field personnel to

optimize labor, materials, and schedules for efficient project execution, with particular attention to

mission-critical mechanical systems on data center projects.


Essential Duties, Roles, Responsibilities & Procedures:


  • Project Execution & Supervision: Oversee all field HVAC and sheet metal construction activities, including ductwork fabrication, installation, and air handling equipment set, to ensure alignment with project plans and schedules.
  • Workforce Coordination: Manage HVAC installers, sheet metal mechanics, and helpers, ensuring the right personnel are assigned to appropriate tasks.
  • Schedule Management: Develop and maintain HVAC and sheet metal construction schedules, coordinating equipment tie-ins and system startups to ensure timely project completion.
  • Quality Control: Monitor ductwork fabrication, installation, and air handling system work to enforce adherence to SMACNA standards and company quality requirements.
  • Safety Compliance: Ensure all HVAC and sheet metal crews follow OSHA and company safety regulations, including elevated work, rigging, and confined space protocols.
  • Subcontractor Management: Coordinate and supervise HVAC and sheet metal subcontractors to maintain project efficiency.
  • Material & Equipment Management: Ensure timely delivery and availability of ductwork, air handling units, VAV boxes, sheet metal materials, and rigging equipment.
  • Startup & Commissioning Support: Coordinate with controls and testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) contractors to support HVAC system startup and commissioning, critical to data center cooling reliability.
  • Issue Resolution: Identify and resolve field issues related to ductwork routing, trade clashes, and mechanical coordination to avoid project delays.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Stay informed of local, state, and federal mechanical codes and SMACNA/ASHRAE standards to ensure compliance.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Maintain regular communication with project managers, engineers, controls contractors, and site personnel.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of daily construction activities, safety incidents, ductwork installation progress, and startup status.
  • Performance Evaluation: Assess workforce efficiency and implement strategies for continuous improvement.


Qualifications & Experience:

Education & Certifications:

o High school diploma or equivalent required.

o Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field

preferred.

o OSHA 30 certification required.

o EPA Section 608 Certification (Universal) required for personnel overseeing refrigerant handling work; SMACNA training preferred.

o Must possess any licenses or certifications required by state or local regulations.

Experience:

o Minimum of 7+ years of experience in industrial HVAC and sheet metal construction.

o At least 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience on HVAC or mechanical

construction sites.

o Experience with mission-critical or data center HVAC systems (CRAH/CRAC units, air

handling units, containment systems, chilled water air-side systems) strongly preferred.

Technical Skills:

o Strong knowledge of HVAC systems, ductwork fabrication and installation methods, and

SMACNA standards.

o Ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints, ductwork shop drawings, and

project specifications.

o Proficiency in construction scheduling software (e.g., Procore, MS Project, Primavera

P6).

o Familiarity with data center cooling systems and containment strategies preferred.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment:

  • Physical Requirements:

o Ability to stand, walk, and navigate construction sites, mechanical rooms, and rooftops

for extended periods.

o Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. occasionally, including ductwork sections and sheet

metal materials.

o Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing ladders and scaffolding, and working in various

weather conditions, including rooftop and elevated work.

  • Work Environment:

o Primarily field-based, working on active construction sites, including mechanical rooms

and rooftop equipment areas.

o Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, high noise levels, and industrial work

environments.

o Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required on job sites.

  • Travel Requirements:

o May require frequent travel between project sites and occasional overnight stays

depending on project demands
