Have you ever thought about teaching it? Glenmont Job Corps Center is urgently seeking an experienced HVAC professional to join our Education & Training Team as an HVAC Instructor. You'll use your industry experience to teach young adults the technical skills, safety practices, professionalism, and problem-solving abilities they need to begin successful careers in HVAC. This position combines classroom instruction with hands-on shop training and helps prepare students for entry-level employment, advanced training, and industry-recognized certifications such as EPA Section 608 and NCCER. Think of this role as part HVAC instructor, part hands-on trainer, part mentor, and part career coach. 🕗 Schedule Monday–Friday | 7:45 AM–4:45 PM Salary $65,000/yearly ⏰ Hours Full-Time 🔧 What Does an HVAC Instructor Actually Do? Simply put: You take what you've learned in the HVAC industry and teach someone else how to do it safely, correctly, and professionally. Our students are preparing to enter the workforce. Some may come into your classroom with HVAC experience. Others may be picking up HVAC tools for the first time. Your job is to help them progress from: “I want to work in HVAC.” to “I have the skills, training, certifications, and confidence to begin my HVAC career.” You'll provide students with industry-recognized Career Technical Training designed to prepare them for full-time employment, higher education, apprenticeships, or advanced training opportunities. 🛠️ Bring the Trade Into the Classroom This isn't a position where you'll spend the entire day standing in front of a whiteboard. HVAC is hands-on—and the training should be too. You'll combine classroom instruction with demonstrations, practical exercises, troubleshooting scenarios, and hands-on skills training so students understand not only what they're doing, but why they're doing it. Depending on the approved curriculum and program requirements, instruction may cover areas such as: 🔥 Heating systems ❄️ Air-conditioning systems 🌬️ Ventilation and airflow ⚡ Basic HVAC electrical concepts 🔧 HVAC tools and equipment 📏 Measurements and system components 🧊 Refrigeration fundamentals 🔍 Troubleshooting and diagnostics 🛠️ Preventative maintenance ⚠️ Workplace and job-site safety 📋 Proper procedures and documentation ♻️ Refrigerant handling and environmental requirements Students should leave your program understanding that being an HVAC professional isn't simply about knowing how to fix equipment. It's about diagnosing problems, working safely, communicating professionally, and doing quality work. 🎓 Help Students Earn Industry-Recognized Credentials A major part of Career Technical Training is helping students leave Job Corps with skills employers recognize. You'll help prepare students for applicable industry credentials, including: ❄️ EPA Section 608 Certification Help students understand proper refrigerant handling practices and prepare for certification requirements. 🔧 NCCER Provide instruction aligned with applicable industry-recognized training and credentialing requirements. You'll monitor student progress and provide additional instruction or coaching when students need extra support. The goal isn't simply to help students pass a test. It's to make sure they understand how to apply what they've learned when they're standing in front of actual HVAC equipment on the job. 👨‍🔧 You May Already Be a Teacher Without Realizing It Have you ever: ✔ Trained a new technician? ✔ Helped an apprentice learn a repair? ✔ Shown someone how to use a tool correctly? ✔ Explained why a system wasn't working? ✔ Walked someone through troubleshooting? ✔ Corrected an unsafe work practice? ✔ Taught someone the “tricks of the trade”? ✔ Helped a newer technician become more confident? Then you've already done part of what an HVAC Instructor does. We're looking for someone who can take years of practical knowledge and break it down into steps that a new HVAC professional can understand. Your experience in the field becomes one of your greatest teaching tools. 🌱 You'll Be More Than an HVAC Instructor Many of our students are preparing for their first real career. That means they need to learn more than HVAC. They also need to understand what employers expect. You'll help students develop professional habits such as: ⏰ Showing up on time 👕 Dressing appropriately for the workplace ⚠️ Following safety procedures 🧰 Taking care of tools and equipment 🧹 Maintaining an organized work area 🤝 Working as part of a team 💬 Communicating professionally 📋 Following instructions and procedures 🔍 Troubleshooting before giving up 🎯 Completing work correctly and on time 💪 Accepting feedback and improving their skills You'll model the professional standards students will eventually be expected to demonstrate on a real job site. 📈 Help Students Progress From Training to Employment Your involvement doesn't necessarily end when a student completes the HVAC curriculum. You'll help students stay on track toward Career Technical Training completion and industry-recognized certifications while preparing them for what comes next. That may include: 📊 Monitoring student progress 🎯 Identifying students who need additional support 📝 Maintaining accurate training and progress documentation 🏆 Helping students reach program completion requirements 💼 Sharing employment opportunities and job leads 🤝 Supporting career placement efforts 🎓 Encouraging advanced education or additional training You'll work with students individually when needed to help identify what's preventing them from progressing and determine what support may help them move forward. 🏫 Create a Classroom Students Can Learn In A successful trade program needs structure. You'll maintain a classroom and training environment that is: ✔ Organized ✔ Safe ✔ Professional ✔ Engaging ✔ Conducive to hands-on learning You'll also establish clear expectations and hold students accountable for attendance, participation, safety, dress code, behavior, professionalism, and care of equipment. Students should understand that your classroom is preparing them for the expectations they'll encounter in the HVAC industry. 💙 Mentor the Person—Not Just the Technician Some students will understand a concept immediately. Others won't. Some will be confident. Others may need encouragement. Some may make mistakes and need someone willing to explain the skill again in a different way. That's part of teaching. You'll provide students with guidance, coaching, accountability, and encouragement while maintaining professional expectations. You'll also model Job Corps Career Success Standards and help students develop behaviors that support long-term employment and independence. 🤝 You'll Have a Team Behind You Student success at Job Corps is a team effort. You'll work with staff across departments such as: 📚 Academics 💬 Counseling 🏠 Residential Living 💼 Career Transition Services 🩺 Health & Wellness 🛡️ Safety & Security 🎓 Other Education & Training programs If a student begins struggling, the question isn't simply: “Why aren't they completing the work?” We also want to understand: “What's getting in the way, and what support will help this student move forward?” You'll communicate with other departments to help ensure students receive appropriate supervision, services, and support. 🔒 Professionalism, Documentation & Integrity Matter As an instructor, you'll also be responsible for maintaining accurate student information and completing required documentation. You'll: 📝 Maintain accurate student training and progress information 📊 Support required program and performance reporting 🔒 Protect confidential student information 📋 Follow Job Corps, DOL, Company, and Center procedures 🎯 Complete assignments and documentation accurately and on time 🚫 Follow all integrity requirements and ensure student data is never manipulated Accurate documentation matters because it reflects a student's actual progress through training. 🔎 Who Would Be Great in This Role?
